Informative Summer 2009 Preview Post

Or rather, I’ll just post what I find interesting and why.In order of airing date, to make things easy.
- Umi Monogatari – ZEXCS with this guy as 監督 (director). Pretty much a perfect pedigree, as far as I’m concerned. It’s based on some weird multimedia pachinko/light novel franchise thing, so hopefully the plot will just be an original creation. There’s an abundance of gorgeously animated hair in the trailer, too! This airs in like five days, so I’m rather anticipating it at this point.
- Umineko no Naku Koro ni – The shittiest visual novel adaptation ever made, coming soon. Okay, maybe that’s a bit harsh. But this one is strictly for the amusement factor. And because I’m interested in how they’ll handle the later stuff and how the seiyuu will work out.
- Taishou Yakyuu Musume. – I really don’t like sports at all (or the 1920s, really), but Mai Nakahara is one of the main characters in this. So I’ll watch it in hopes that it manages to exceed my expectations like Bamboo Blade did. Amusingly, Hirohashi is playing a character named Tamaki in this…
- Bakemonogatari – Akiyuki Shinbo. NISIOISIN. Poyoyon Rock. If that’s not a formula for a must-watch I have absolutely no idea what the hell is. Looks like Shinbo is up to his old cast reusing tricks, though – we have Itoshiki-sensei as the lead male and Chiwa Saitou as the lead female. The trailer has… rather fluid lipflap animation, to say the least. I wonder what other unique visual effects this show will have, though, other than the usual Shinbo stuff. Since Poyoyon Rock is the animation director again, I’m expecting some cool stuff in that department. Maybe we’ll get some fights which are reminiscent of Soul Taker or the DVDs of Tsukuyomi. Or maybe we’ll just get SZS2. Or something entirely different. I’m sure it’ll be great no matter what, though.
- CANAAN – Original scenario by Kinoko Nasu. Nothing more to say here.
- Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei – Another one? And two Shinbo shows in the same season? Well, okay. It probably won’t be as interesting as Bakemonogatari, but I’m certainly not gonna complain about more SZS.
- Spice and Wolf II – I watched the first one, so I might as well watch this one. And it’s by a non-shitty studio this time too. Unfortunately, Nakahara’s character doesn’t appear to be in this one… so I’ll probably end up dropping it halfway through when I realize that she’s not going to show up.
- Yoku Wakaru Gendai Mahou – Ai Nonaka lead and the KKN staff + studio. Oh, and it’s about magical programming. Sounds good to me! A friend of mine assures me that the novels which this is based on have a very good stopping point, if not outright conclusion, despite being back in serialization after a lapse of a few years, so I think this will manage to avoid the typical shitty anime-original LN adaptation ending syndrome.
GA and Kanamemo are big maybes. Depends on who’s subbing them, really. Everything else looks shitty or absolutely fails to capture my interest (Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 being an excellent example of the latter; although it’s BONES, I really have no desire to watch it).
Looks like another pretty interesting season. On the other hand, I can’t really foresee any surprise hits, perhaps due to the general low volume of shows during summer seasons. Ah well. There’s something to be said for tried-and-true formulas as well, I suppose.

I’m just watching Gendai Mahou for the Mahoutsukai no Yoru vibes. That bad?
